Spanish Word of the Day: pedazo

Jesús, a Spanish friend of mine, is quite foul-mouthed and likes to call people pedazo de gay every now and then, just because they’re not 100 percent machista. Of course that very expression is an insult, but that’s the way he talks to people.

But not the insult is interesting about that expression, but just one word; pedazo. If you translate it to English you’ll get “piece”, so what Jesús actually says is that you’re “a piece of gay”. Well, there could be worse insults. That teaches us that pedazo de can be used as “piece of”, like in un pedazo de pan (a piece of bread). Funny enough that last expression means “sweetie” or “to be a real sweety” when combined with the verb ser (¡Eres un pedazo de pan! – “You’re a real sweety!”).
