Reader Question: Extra Options for the Sentence Database?

by Ramses on August 14, 2009 · 4 comments

I’m currently coding some extra’s for the sentence database I launched recently. So far response has been good and people really get something out of it, it seems.

But all that coding takes quite some time, so I’ve been thinking about making a special area for members who pay a small monthly fee. In exchange for that they’ll get some benefits, like:

  • More sentences (my goal is to put up around 7,000 sentences for free, and the rest will be for premium members)
  • An option to save sentences
  • An option to export saved sentences to a file that you can input in several SRS programs like Anki
  • No ads
  • (Maybe) a forum to connect with other learners

I still need some weeks to make this all, but I first want to know if there are people interested in getting such a monthly plan. Don’t ask me for prices yet; I don’t know exactly what I want to charge. Just vote yes, no or maybe. If you have suggestions for the monthly fee, feel free to add your thoughts in the comment section.

Are you willing to pay a small monthly fee to get some extra's for the Spanish-English sentence database?

  • No (71%, 56 Votes)
  • Maybe, depends on the price (23%, 18 Votes)
  • Yes (6%, 5 Votes)

Total Voters: 79

I’d hate to see something so useful turn into some pay site.
There are dozens of Spanish learning sites out there, most of which ask you to pay for their full services. It would be nice to see just one more free one.

Well that’s because there’s quite some work to put in. At the moment it’s all charity, but if I have to put in some serious hours for coding I’d like to see something back.

But because I see many ‘no’ votes I’ll maintain the database in it’s current form and will just add sentences (I already made a script for this, so that’s not the problem time-wise).

Maybe I’ll add the export function later on for a small fee if I really need to put in many hours. But the sentences itself will remain free.

There are many benefits with this site as it is and, at least to me, very informative and enjoyable. Adding a “Premium” (fee) section would not necessarily take away from the benefits we, as the readers, already enjoy. If I am reading correctly (Ramses, please correct me if I am wrong) the premium section would be an optional section of this site and basically offer a few added benefits for those willing to pay for the extra service above and beyond the site as it is now. Again, just an option so really nothing to lose for those that would prefer not to be part of the premium service.

My only suggestion would be to offer 3 month, 6 month, and year fees payable via PayPal (just easier), and have an open forum where we might share learning ideas, ask questions, give thoughts, etc. OK, just my two cents. Either way, I am happy to be a reader on this site.

Correct. As I’m thinking about it now I might even offer all sentences for free, and will offer the export function for a small fee (smaller than I had in mind); that’s where all the time goes to.

I think many people that voted in the poll saw the word money, and thought: “Nooo, please don’t take this away from us!“. I’m not taking away anything, just adding some stuff people asked for. But because that takes quite some time to make, I’d like to see something back as well.

About your idea for the plans: it sounds great!
