Are You Trying to Learn Spanish or Actually Doing It?

Everywhere I look on the internet I see people posting blogs, tweets, forum posts, etc. stating that they’re “trying to learn language X” (‘X’ often equals Spanish). Trying to learn a language?!

What’s all this fuss about trying learning a language? It’s like that you say: “Oh yeah, I’m going to this 100 hour course and if I’m not able speak Spanish well afterwards I’ll quit. But hey, I TRIED!“. Tried…

This post is going to be extremely short, but think about this: are you trying to learn Spanish or actually it doing? Trying sounds so free, so not motivated.

Oh yes I tried to learn Spanish. But where did I end? Nowhere! Really, it brought me nothing except for the though “I’d do better choosing another major“. Only when I decided to actually learn Spanish instead of just kicking the ball around a bit trying to socre, I was scoring goals.

So ask yourself: Am I still saying I’m trying to learn spanish, or actually getting sick amount of input in the form of watching TV, listening music and reading books? Do I actually speak after all that input, or am I trying to speak, forcing myself to do so and therefore sounding really bad?

A short, but excellent post and very to the point. I changed from I “can” speak Spanish to I “speak” Spanish. A small change, but a huge difference in my level. Thanks, Ramses, for pointing out those small changes that make a huge difference.
