Tipo is a really easy word: it has an easy pronunciation and only has one meaning. Or isn’t that the case? Well, it pretty much only means “type”, “kind” or “sort”. But there’s a colloquial meaning as well.
When refering to a person, it can mean “guy” or “woman” (tipa). In England they’d simply say “bloke”. Not that special really, but it’s often used in Spain, so knowing what it means when you hear it is pretty nice.
*Note: Tipo isn’t only used to refer to a person, but also to someone’s physique.

There are a couple of common expression expressions in Spanish with the word “tipo”:
1- “Aguantar el tipo”. It roughly means “hold on” or “resist”:
“A pesar de la presión a la que estaban sometidos, el equipo aguantó el tipo”.
2- “Jugarse el tipo”. Approximately, “to risk one's neck”:
“Se jugó el tipo enfrentándose a aquellos matones”.
