Spanish Word of the Day: culo

Everytime I hang out with my Andalusian friend L-star, he’s talking about los culos of the girls that walk by. You could say that he has no respect for women, but that’s not the case. Anyway, because he keeps repeating the word and its combinations all the time, it’s burnt in my brain. No, I’ll never forget culo. Poor me…

So, what does culo mean? Simply said it means ‘arse’, ‘butt’, ‘bum’, ‘ass’, etc., etc. And you can guess it; it’s a vulgar or at least colloquial word, used throughout the hispanosphere.

At least, that was what I thought it mean. It appears that it can mean ‘to be flabbergasted’, ‘to be amazed’. ‘bottom’ (sounds obvious) and even ‘luck’ (although not used that much in this context). As you’d expect, this are all forms used in colloquial speech.
