Spanish Word of the Day: acá

by Ramses on December 3, 2008 · 0 comments

A rather interesting word today: acá. Until recently, I never gave any attention to it as I spend most of my time with people from Spain and stuff from Spain (movies, series, music, etc.). Still, some research showed me that it’s used in Spain as well, mainly to refer to movement (i.e.: ir de acá para allá).

In many parts of Latin-America, however, it has roughly the same meaning as aquí. Again, research showed that it means something like ‘closer from me than from you’. Also, I’ve heard some people saying that in Argentina acá has the same meaning as aquí, where they prefer to use the first.

*Extra: read this interesting discussion over at the WordReference forums to get a better understanding of the word acá.

**Extra extra: most, if not all, sentences below are used in many parts of Latin-America and *not* in Spain.

Sentences

¡Ven acá!
Come here!

Ya viene para acá.
He’s on his way over.

Nos pasamos el día de acá para allá.
We spent the whole day going to and from.

Tráelo más acá.
Bring it nearer.

Acá tiene razón.
